USS Makin Island Departs San Diego in Early Test of COVID-19 Fleet Countermeasures

SAN DIEGO (April 1, 2020) – The amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island’s (LHD 8) Chiefs Mess poses for a photo on the flight deck in honor of the 127th Chief Petty Officer birthday. Makin Island personnel maintain mission-oriented social distancing as part of coronavirus mitigation measures to ensure the health of the crew. Eight days after 1,900 sailors boarded the ships of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, two of the ARG’s three ships had departed San Diego for an upcoming exercise as the Navy is restricting non-deployed movements to contain the spread of COVID-19 among its fleet.
