USNI News is the U.S. Naval Institute’s online news and analysis portal. Designed to be responsive to world events and 24-hour information cycles, USNI News seeks to provide germane analysis quickly on national security matters. Our contributors range from defense journalists, active duty service members and expert defense analysts. We will happily entertain video, audio and other multimedia contributions.

Editorial Independence Policy

USNI News is an editorially independent news and information service published by the U.S. Naval Institute. The U.S. Naval Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has a mission to “provide an independent forum for those who dare to read, think, speak, and write to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to global security.” To that end, USNI News and the Naval Institute do not advocate any political or business interest.

USNI News reporters and correspondents adhere to fact-driven journalism based on The Associated Press statement of news values and principles.

Relationship with the U.S. Naval Institute

USNI News staff are employed by the U.S. Naval Institute and work alongside the editorial staff of Proceedings, Naval History Magazine and the Naval Institute Press. The editor of USNI News reports to the CEO/Publisher of the U.S. Naval Institute, and all internal conversations are considered off the record.


Donor Transparency Policy

We are committed to transparency in every aspect of funding for USNI News.

Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse donors or their products, services or opinions.

We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals, organizations and foundations to help with our general operations, sponsor features, and special projects. Our news judgments are made independently – not based on or influenced by donors. We do not give supporters the rights to assign, review or edit content.

We will make public all donors to USNI News who give $5,000 or more per year. As a nonprofit, we will avoid accepting donations from anonymous sources, and we do not accept donations from political parties, elected officials or candidates actively seeking public office. We do not accept donations from sources who, deemed by our board of trustees, present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence.
