The U.S.-built humanitarian aid pier, which has been delivering aid into Gaza was removed from its anchored position and towed back to Ashdod, Israel, on Friday due to expected high seas. Temporarily relocating the pier will prevent structural damage caused by the heightened sea state, U.S. Central Command said in a release. After the period of expected high seas, the pier will be rapidly re-anchored to the coast of Gaza and resume delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The ships dispatched for the operation include:

U.S. ships continue to patrol the Red Sea as part of Operation Prosperity Guardian, the U.S.-led multinational effort to protect ships moving through the region. Houthi forces in Yemen continue to attack merchant shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, while U.S. naval forces in the region have continued strikes against Houthi weapons that U.S. Central Command says are a threat to naval and merchant ships. Houthi forces say they are targeting ships with connections to the United Kingdom, the U.S. and Israel.

The U.N. Security Council on Jan. 10 approved a resolution calling on Yemen’s Houthi rebel group to “cease its brazen” attacks in the Red Sea.

On Friday, U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) destroyed two Houthi uncrewed surface vessels in the Red Sea. USCENTCOM forces also shot down one Houthi uncrewed aerial system (UAS) launched over the Red Sea.

USCENTCOM forces destroyed seven Houthi radars in Yemen. These radars allow the Houthis to target maritime vessels and endanger commercial shipping.

On Thursday, USCENTCOM forces destroyed one Houthi air defense sensor in Yemen. USCENTCOM forces later destroyed one Houthi USV and two Houthi patrol boats in the Red Sea. USCENTCOM forces also shot down one Houthi UAS over the Red Sea.

On Wednesday, CENTCOM forces destroy three anti-ship cruise missile (ASCM) launchers in a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen and shot down one Houthi UAS over the Red Sea.

One Houthi USV struck M/V Tutor, a Liberian flagged, Greek-owned and -operated bulk cargo carrier, in the Red Sea. M/V Tutor most recently docked in Russia. The impact of the USV caused severe flooding and damage to the engine room. One civilian mariner remains missing following the attack. The crew abandoned ship and were rescued by USS Philippine Sea (CG-58) and partner forces. M/V Tutor remains in the Red Sea and is slowly taking on water.

On Tuesday, CENTCOM forces destroyed two Houthi ASCM launchers in Yemen.

The Defense Intelligence Agency said since mid-February traffic through the Red Sea has dropped off by 90 percent, according to a report released on Thursday.

From November to March, 18 ships have been attacked by Houthi forces, according to DIA.

In the Gulf of Aden

Houthi forces hit a bulk cargo ship with two anti-ship cruise missiles in the Gulf of Aden, U.S. Central Command announced on Thursday.

“Both missiles struck MV Verbena, a Palauan-flagged, Ukrainian-owned, Polish-operated bulk cargo carrier. MV Verbena most recently docked in Malaysia and was enroute to Italy carrying wood construction material,” reads a statement from CENTCOM. “Verbena reported damage and subsequent fires on board. One civilian mariner was severely injured during the attack. Aircraft from USS Philippine Sea (CG-58) medically evacuated the injured mariner to a partner force ship nearby for medical attention.”

On Saturday, the crew issued a distress call indicating they were abandoning the ship. M/V Anna Meta responded to render assistance. Anna Meta has recovered the mariners and is transporting them to safety. The crew abandoned ship due to continued fires and an inability to control them.

The Iranian frigate IRIN Jamaran was eight nautical miles from M/V Verbena and did not respond to the distress call.

On Monday, partner forces shot down one uncrewed aerial system (UAS) launched by the Houthis into the Gulf of Aden.

U.S. Coast Guard Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutters are forward-deployed to the region under Patrol Forces Southwest Asia (PATFORSWA). PATFORSWA deploys Coast Guard personnel and ships with U.S. and regional naval forces throughout the Middle East. Initially deployed in 2003 to support Operation Iraqi Freedom, PATFORSWA is now a permanent presence based out of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
