A previous version of this post had the incorrect number for the Air Wing attached to USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71). It’s CVW 11, not CVW 17.

These are the approximate positions of the U.S. Navy’s deployed carrier strike groups and amphibious ready groups throughout the world as of July 15, 2019, based on Navy and public data. In cases where a CSG or ARG is conducting disaggregated operations, the chart reflects the location of the capital ship.

The Abraham Lincoln CSG is operating the North Arabian Sea. This general area has been a hotspot given the previously-reported attacks on tankers, the shootdown of a Navy-operated RQ-4 drone and last week’s attempt by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy to take a British tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.

On July 9, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford said the U.S. is “engaging now with a number of countries to see if we can put together a coalition that would ensure freedom of navigation both in the Straits of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab.”
