The United States Navy and 28 partner nations will begin the 29th biennial Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2024 exercise on Thursday around the Hawaiian Islands with 40 surface ships, three submarines, 14 national land forces, over 150 aircraft and more than 25,000 personnel taking part in the drills that will end on Aug.1 according to a navy release.
Aircraft including the F-35 Lightning II fighter, P-8 Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA), and V-22 Osprey will be operating out of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay.
RIMPAC 2024 will include multi-domain warfare in a range of scenarios from anti-submarine warfare, multi-ship surface warfare, multinational amphibious landings, and multi-axis defense of the carrier strike group against live forces.
The amphibious and land forces will be made up of nine partner nations and 13 ships while a humanitarian aid and disaster relief (HADR) exercise with eight countries, five ships, five landing craft, five aircraft, multiple land forces, and over 2,500 total participants including the participants of the statewide Hawaii Healthcare Emergency Management exercise will be carried out as part of RIMPAC 2024. The HADR exercise control and scenario development are supported by subject matter experts from the Center for Excellence in Disaster Management, Pacific Disaster Center, USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, and Singapore’s Changi Regional Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Coordination Centre.
The previous RIMPAC in 2022 involved 25 partner nations, 38 surface ships, three submarines, nine national land forces, approximately 170 aircraft and more than 25,000 personnel.
