U.S. Navy, Coast Guard Rescue Mariners in Persian Gulf

U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships rescued personnel from an Iranian vessel that sank in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday, U.S. Central Command announced on social media site X.

USS Devastator (MCM-6), a mine countermeasure ship, and USCGC Clarence Sutphin Jr. (WPC-1147) rescued seven mariners after they abandoned M/V Shayesteh, a cargo ship owned by an Iranian company but flying a Qatari flag, according to Central Command. The ship flies a Qatari flag when in territorial waters, reads the post.

The seven mariners – two Indian civilians and five Iranian merchants – are aboard Clarence Sutphin Jr., where they are receiving medical care.

Shayesteh sank after the the crew abandoned ship and were rescued.

The Navy release does not list a management company nor an owner for Shayesteh.
