A sailor assigned to carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) was charged on Tuesday with selling fentanyl in the 2023 death of another Lincoln sailor, according to a charging document filed in the Southern District Court of California.
Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Bailey Szramowski, of Pennsylvania, was charged with knowingly and intentionally distributing fentanyl, which led to the death of another person, according to the charging documents. It is unclear if Szramowski has been arrested. PACER, the online database for federal cases, does not list a hearing or an appearance in court.
Szarmowski, who enlisted in January 2021, has been assigned to Abe since May 2021, according to his official Navy biography.
The charges stem from the January 2023 death of a sailor, assigned to Lincoln who died from an overdose. At the time of their death, the sailor, called A.N. in the charging documents, was living off the ship in San Leandro, Calif. Police searched their home and found evidence of drug use with an autopsy report showing the sailor died of fentanyl intoxication, according to the charging document.
A second sailor assigned to Lincoln, called C.L. in the charging documents, overdosed aboard Lincoln 10 days later but was saved using Narcan.
C.L. told the Naval Criminal Investigative Service that A.N. and Szramowski sold Percocet to sailors on Lincoln. Percocet is a prescription painkiller that uses oxycodone and acetaminophen.
C.L. told NCIS that he purchased the pills at approximately 10 times during Lincoln’s 2022 deployment, as well as four more times when the ship returned home to San Diego, Calif. The sailor also said that Szramowski told him to lie to NCIS and say he bought the pills from A.N.
A.N.’s aunt and uncle also told NCIS that Szramowski told them to delete texts between A.N. and Szramowski.
“According to [the aunt and uncle], SZRAMOWSKI further stated that he ‘might go down for murder’ or it would ‘ruin his future’ or words to that effect if the police found the messages,” reads the charging document.
NCIS also interviewed A.N.’s fiance who told law enforcement that Szramowski ordered the Percocet pills online and then sold them to other sailors. She also told NCIS that Szramowski told her to delete messages from A.N.’s phone.
The fiance told NCIS in another interview that Szramowski told her that he gave A.N. fentanyl-laced pills but had told A.N. “the pills were different,” according to the charging document.
A forensic examination of A.N.’s phone found communication between Szramowski and A.N. about drug use and sales as well as videos of the sailors using drugs. NCIS agents also found a $100 payment on CashApp between A.N. and Szramowski.
Szramowski’s case has been assigned to two federal defense lawyers who could not be reached by the time of posting.
