In the Middle Pacific

The Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group is headed for home after having completed its second deployment in as many years to the Western Pacific. The CSG has chopped into the U.S 3rd Fleet area of responsibility and will shortly head to its homeport in San Diego, Calif.

USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) was in the Western Pacific at a time the Navy’s only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), is moored in its homeport of Yokosuka, Japan, for a planned maintenance period.

CVW 2 is embarked aboard Carl Vinson and includes nine squadrons and detachments:

• The “Bounty Hunters” of Strike Fighter Squadrons (VFA) 2 from Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif.

The leadership of DESRON 1 is embarked aboard Carl Vinson and commands the CSG’s guided-missile destroyers.

In the Western Pacific

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) is in port in Yokosuka, Japan, for a maintenance availability that began in January.

Amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD-1) with Marines and sailors of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit embarked began Exercise Foal Eagle on April 1.

The 31st MEU is the first Marine Corps unit to be operationally deployed with F-35B short take-off/vertical landing jets. Six aircraft belonging to the Green Knights of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 121 are currently deployed with the Wasp ARG.

Wasp, dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD-48) and amphibious transport dock USS Green Bay (LPD-20) make up the core Wasp ARG.

USS Sterett (DDG-104) and USS Dewey (DDG-105) are on a scheduled deployment to conduct operations in the Indo-Pacific region. They will also support the Wasp Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) in order to advance U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Up-Gunned ESG concept and will train with forward-deployed amphibious ships across all mission areas.

Amphibious warship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) is set to operate with Wasp as part of the Ssang Yong amphibious exercise in South Korea, according to the Yonhap newswire.  Wasp replaced Bonhomme Richard as the Navy’s Japan-based forward deployed big deck amphib in January. Bonhomme Richard is set to return to the U.S. later this year.

On March 29, Navy hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH-19) arrived at Bengkulu, Indonesia, as part of Pacific Partnership 2018.

“The mission in Bengkulu will continue through April 12 and will feature mission personnel working side-by-side with Indonesian medical professionals, participating in civil engineering projects, conducting humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR) readiness drills, and partnering in community outreach engagements in the local Bengkulu community,” reads a statement from the Navy.

The disaster response training mission includes assets from the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, France, Peru and Japan. After Indonesia, USNS Mercy will make mission stops in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Japan.

In Singapore

The Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group transited the Strait of Malacca on Sunday before coming into port at the Changi Naval Base in Singapore on Monday. The CSG is headed East on to operate in the Pacific Ocean and then home after spending six months operating in U.S. 5th Fleet and U.S. 7th Fleet.

USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) transited the Suez Canal on March 27 and is now in the U.S. 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility.

The ARG, which deployed on Feb. 7 from Mayport, Fla., includes amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7), amphibious transport dock USS New York (LPD-21), dock landing ship USS Oak Hill (LSD-51), Fleet Surgical Team (FST) 8 and FST-4, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 28, Tactical Air Control Squadron (TACRON) 22, components of Naval Beach Group (NBG) 2, and the embarked staff of Amphibious Squadron 4.

In the Western Atlantic

USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) is underway in the Virginia Capes operating areas.

In the Eastern Pacific

USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) departed its homeport of Bremerton, Wash., on March 24 and is underway for pre-deployment workup training in the Southern California Operating Areas.

USS Essex (LHD-2) is underway in the Southern California Operating Areas.
