In the Sea of Japan

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), USS Nimitz (CVN-68) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), along with their escorts and air wings, are operating off the Korean peninsula. This exercise is scheduled to complete this week.

Exercise By the Numbers:

The U.S. Navy periodically conducts large-scale exercises that involve several carriers. The last time three carriers exercised together occurred in the Western Pacific in 2007.

This week’s tri-carrier exercise includes:

• 23,000 sailors and Marines deployed on 15 surface ships.
• More than 200 tactical aircraft.
• 12 Navy and Marine Fighter/Attack Squadrons with 120 F/A-18C/D Hornets and F/A-18E/F.
• 15 E-2C/D airborne early warning aircraft.
• 12 EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft.
• 54 MH-60R and MH-60S helicopters.
• An undeclared number of attack submarines (SSNs) deployed in direct and associated support.
• The aircraft and ships come from 10 different homeports and home fields.

In the Eastern Pacific

The Carl Vinson CSG continues its underway training in the Southern California Operating Areas conducting a Sustainment Training Exercise (SUSTEX). According to a Navy spokesman, SUSTEX “allows all elements of a CSG to regroup in order to maintain their efficiency ahead of a future deployment.”

USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) is continuing underway training after leaving its homeport of Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton.

In the Persian Gulf

The America Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit are operating in the Persian Gulf.

The ARG includes amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA-60), amphibious dock landing ship USS Pearl Harbor (LSD-52) and amphibious transport dock USS San Diego (LPD-22).

In the Western Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea

USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) is underway conducting a Combined Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) with Marines of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH-20) arrived off Puerto Rico in early October and continues to provide full hospital services to support U.S. disaster relief efforts.

“The Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Comfort replenished its medical supplies, food and other necessities, by connecting with the fleet replenishment oiler USNS Big Horn while underway off the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, on 6 November… The Comfort received 193 pallets of food and medical supplies from the Big Horn during the underway replenishment,” read a statement from the service.
“Since it departed from Norfolk, Virginia, Sept. 29 to provide humanitarian relief in the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, the sailors aboard the Comfort have treated 1,476 patients, performed 147 surgeries and admitted 293 patients. Patients continued to be treated on the ship during the short underway period.”
