Document: First Message to Defense Department from SECDEF Mattis

The following is the first message from Secretary of Defense James Mattis to the Department of Defense.

Message to the Department of Defense from Secretary of Defense James Mattis

It’s good to be back and I’m grateful to serve alongside you as Secretary of Defense.

Together with the Intelligence Community we are the sentinels and guardians of our nation. We need only look to you, the uniformed and civilian members of the Department and your families, to see the fundamental unity of our country. You represent an America committed to the common good; an America that is never complacent about defending its freedoms; and an America that remains a steady beacon of hope for all mankind.

Every action we take will be designed to ensure our military is ready to fight today and in the future. Recognizing that no nation is secure without friends, we will work with the State Department to strengthen our alliances. Further, we are devoted to gaining full value from every taxpayer dollar spent on defense, thereby earning the trust of Congress and the American people.

I am confident you will do your part. I pledge to you I’ll do my best as your Secretary.

  • Earl Tower

I think he was a fine choice for SecDef, and I hope to see some of the problems the military has been having the past few decades to be put back on track toward solutions.

  • Kurn

Sure does sound like he’s setting the stage for something.Hope I’m wrong.

    • sferrin

Don’t get your panties in a bunch.

    • ron_snyder

He is- making our military more effective and efficient.

    • Bob Burke

Why try to read something into a very understandable message?

    • Tony Ferrante

Yeah, wiping Radical Islam off the face of the planet

    • Forthwith

I guess with 99.99% positive, there has to be a negative comment…

  • muzzleloader

    God speed, General Mattis.

  • Reg Armstrong

Semper Fi. General. Shake up the bureaucratic Department of Defense and get them streamlined and moving to put our fighting forces in A-1 shape. You are the man for the job and I know you will make a great contribution to our national security. God bless and fair winds in your sails.

  • Retired Navy Guy

Breathing easier now that we have leaders in leadership positions!

    • OpusX

Much better than some previously unknown community organizer, that’s for sure

      • Sons of Liberty

The lord works in mysterious ways. If it wasn’t for Obama thin skin and lightweights like Susan Rice and Ben Rhodes pushing General Mattis out he would have become Commandant. Instead the Marine Gods had a plan as they always do and delivered the right man at the right time for the right job.

We are lucky enough to be around to witness SecDef Mattis make even more history.

  • Tom Barlow

    Semper Fi Sir; welcome aboard!!

My son the Marine is as proud as can be.

  • Edward J. Palumbo

I applaud a fine choice as Secretary of Defense. James Mattis is a man of his word, and I believe he’s the right man for the job.

  • Frank Szabo

Even though they wouldn’t take me due to age I’d be pleased to sign up again for the Secretary’s beloved Corps.

  • Robert Wood

The Troops partied hard last night.

There are enemies to be engaged and Obama isn’t around to arm and fund them anymore.

    • Matt

Trump will probably give the troops funds and arms too

      • Chris Crowley

the point was we won’t be arming our enemies any longer.

  • Jimmy S.

    God speed, SECDEF Mattis.

  • Gregory

probably the only decent and honourable choice that the Trump has made yet.

  • ceholley01

God Bless Mr. Secretary, it is so good to have you back at the helm. I wish you the very best, Semper Fidelis, Oorah

  • Diogenesof Sinope

A class act all the way.

  • nwwapiti

Good luck buddy, be sure to clear out the “Yes Men” whether they be Officers or Enlisted that Odumbo promoted. You know the ones that would blindly fire on American citizens if he had ordered them to.

  • vegass04 .

Ohhh I’m sure Putin welcomes you and your boss.. Carter you/ll be missed..

  • dr.boobish

General Mattis…please address the regimen for recruit training in the Marine Corps. It has become softer and softer over the years and today’s marines don’t go through near the rigorous training that marines of past generations did. The Corps needs to step up the training so that our marines of present day are as mean a bunch of devil dogs as we were 50 years ago. Semper Fi

    • El Terryble

Apparently you haven’t been reading the news, because “Thumping Third” carries on the traditions of old at MCRD Parris Island.

    • Casino Knight

Dr. Boob….The Marines today are as smart, strong and tough as we were 50 years ago, probably more so. They turned us loose from boot camp after 8 weeks, then sent us to ITR. 2 weeks in Staging Battalion then off to Vietnam for a 13 month tour. Many of our Marines today have been at war for 15 years, and in my book they are every bit as tough as we, and the men before us.

“Every action we take will be designed to ensure our military is ready to fight today and in the future.”

This and ONLY this should be the priority. Not green diesel. Not transgender bathrooms. Not asking or telling. Just this.

  • Eric Arllen

“an America that remains a steady beacon of hope for all mankind.”

    Mankind. Meaning all of humanity.

What a breath of fresh air. No destructive PC inclusive shading of the correct term to apply meaningless salve to a mission-sucking demographic.

  • Capt. Norman

Our prayers are with you General, may He give you the guidance and the wisdom of Solomon!!!

  • graylens

My boy (a fine young man) is a Marine, hopefully a pilot, his best friend is a midshipman in the process of qualifying to be a Seal. Take good care of them and their fellow military volunteers. You have a lot of work cleaning up Obamas’ mess

    • old guy

Semper Fi. I pray for a safe and successful career for your son. The chances for combat dropped significantly on Jan. 20th.

  • Taryn Eldredge

The adults are in charge now! Thank you General Mattis — NO more apologizing. God Speed!

  • old guy

At last, a real Secretary, supported by his boss.

  • El Terryble

God bless you, Secretary of War Mattis, our troops, the Department of Defense, and the United States of America. And may the Lord Most High guide you as you begin to fix the calamity of the last eight years.

“I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel.”
